why do some performing muscians throw memorabilia into the audience while others dont?
this goes for touching fans hands etc
i was at a Lady Gaga Concert and almost all of her openers threw anything from drumsticks to towels, water bottles, and guitar picks into the audience, but when she sings, she never really tosses things to her fans, and she rarely touches our hands.
does it have something to do with her charchter and the image she tries to preserve and maintain?
A lot of performers just don’t feel that comfortable with intimate interaction between themselves and fans. Especially when there are security concerns. I once saw a singer pulled from the stage by overzealous fans, and I’m pretty sure that was the last time he reached down to touch hands. When he returned to the stage, he looked absolutely terrified.
Stage demeanor mostly has to do with the personality of the performer. It’s not uncommon for someone whose stage show is ostentatious to be essentially a shy and reserved person who’s not especially inclined to engage in one-on-one interaction with fans. And some people just consider it cheesy to throw random items into the audience. But bands who are opening for an established act are more likely to pepper the audience with goodies, since their careers are still on the rise (hopefully) and they want to ingratiate themselves to an audience that’s there to see the headliner. It’s sort of like bringing a bottle of wine when you’re a guest at someone else’s dinner party. It’s a small gesture that leaves a big impression on the recipient. And the person who catches a drumstick or pick will be more inclined to buy that artists’ music and encourage his/her friends to listen, as well. Basically, it’s a really cheap marketing strategy.
